Ben Hogan on Long Irons

Creative Commons License photo credit: JohnHallAssociates   The late  Ben Hogan’s advice will help you if you are still using the long irons (1-4).  “The primary difference between an iron shot and a wood shot, is that an iron shot is definitely a sharp hit, while a wood shot is swung and the ball is swept off either the tee or the turf.  Since the iron swing is shorter than the wood swing, and because the player must hit down on the ball, the action of the body and the hands must be much quicker.”

* “Set the wrists much sooner in the backswing than you do with woods.  *  Shift weight to your left foot on the top of the backswing.  *  Start the backswing by turning your left hip to the left.  *  Hit down on the ball.”
