Long Iron Chip

photo credit: Tom Purves Many amateurs think of using only lofted clubs, such as a Lob Wedge, for shots around the green. They don't realize that highly lofted clubs deliver more erratic results.
Rather than a lofted club, try using a 4 or 5 iron. Getting the ball immediately rolling on the green with a 4 iron, is a much “safer” shot than a lob shot. There are too many variables with lob shots, for instance: upon landing, how far will the ball roll – will there be enough backspin – how open should the clubface be – what is the lie like etc?
With a 4 or 5 iron, you can use a putting grip, aim the ball as you would with a putter and use a putting stroke. Much simpler with better results.
